Reading

School-Home Connection

Your child is reading "The Kids' Invention Book" by Arlene Erlbach.  This selection begins with profiles of four young inventors, including Chester Greenwood, who invented earmuffs in 1873 when he was fifteen years old.  The second part of the selection encourages children to plan and perhaps create inventions of their own.

Vocabulary
Make a Sentence
The following words are new vocabulary your child has learned while reading "The Kids' Invention Book":

*document                              *circular
*prosthetic                             *scholarship
*device                                   *modify

*disabilities

Discuss each word with your child.  Next, print each word on a card, turn the cards face down, and shuffle them.  Challenge your child to draw a word card from the pile and use the word in a sentence.

How Did They Think of That?
With your child, take a walk around your home and identify important inventions.  Choose one or two to discuss with your child.  Share ideas on how the inventor might have come up with the idea for the invention, how he or she might have modified it to make it better, and how others have modified it over the years to make it even better.

Inventions at Work
Tell your child about an invention you use in your work.  Show or describe what it does, how it functions, and how you operate it.  If this device has been improved during the time you have used it, tell how.  Then brainstorm with your child how it might be improved even more.
